There are many places to register a domain name. However, you want to be careful when registering your domain extension as there are a few "fly by night" operations out there on the internet. Look for ICANN accredited domain registrars as they are usually well established and reputable. Registering a domain name means you own the domain for as long as you pay for the yearly registration. You can register a domain name for up to 10 years at a time. So long as you keep up with the registration fee, the domain is yours.

Domain registration is easy with most domain registrars. You create an account with a username and password then you are ready to register a domain. You may want to pick a domain name as it relates to your business i.e. If you business name is Business Inc. then you will want to try and secure that domain name BusinessInc.com. Or you may want to register the generic domain name for the service or product you offer i.e. If you sell strapping in Canada, then you will want to buy Strapping.ca or StrappingCanada.com.

There are many factors you need to consider when registering a domain name for yourself, non-profit or company. You want to protect your interests especially if you are selling a patented product. What I mean by that is you will want to secure all of the relevant domain extensions as it relates to your product.

Also, there are a couple of ways you can secure a domain name. One is to try and register it to see if it is available. If it is not and is owned by someone else, you might have to buy it on the aftermarket. Domain extensions can be valuable so expect to pay more then registration fee if you are buying it on the domain aftermarket.
